Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Will I lose weight during the experiment?

During the trial in which we feed subjects enough food to maintain their body weight, they do not lose or gain weight.   During the trial in which we feed them less food, subjects have lost an average of 2-4 pounds.   Most of this loss is water weight which is quickly regained after the trial.

2.  Will I be hungry on the diet?

Most people do feel hungry at various times during the day. Some may feel tired or run down during the trial when they are eating less food than they need to maintain their body weight.

3. Are the drop landings difficult to do?

No.  The effort expended doing the drop landings is similar in intensity to a slowly strolling walk. Most people find the drop landings very tolerable.

4. Are the drop landings uncomfortable?

Although the drop landings are done in bare feet, subjects land on a soft foam mat that cushions the landing, and they walk from one platform to another on a foam mat, as well. Some people develop some mild muscle soreness in their legs after the first two days of exercise, but this usually goes away by the third day. During exercise sessions our staff will always be present to ensure your safety and to monitor any discomforts you may feel.

5. What will the meals be like?

The meals will be comprised mostly of a commercial liquid food product (Ensure PlusŪ) supplemented with carefully selected frozen entrees and snacks (granola bars, muffins, fruits etc) to add variety to the 8-day controlled diet.   Several options will be offered.

6.  Will I be injured in the experiment?

Not likely.  Because you will perform a lot of exercise, you may begin to develop blisters on your feet.  You should draw these to the attention of our staff as soon as you notice them so that they can be treated to prevent them from developing further.
