NOV 10 – 13                  WEEK 10:  NO LAB MEETING

LABORATORY GUIDE:  Your lab grade will count 25% of your Bios 170 course grade.  The lab grade is

determined by the total number of points earned out of 110 possible points.

ATTENDANCE:  You are expected to attend every lab to receive credit for this course.  If you must be absent, see or phone your lab instructor or leave a message with the Biological Sciences Department secretary (593-2290) as soon as possible.  There will be NO make-up quizzes or exams without a verifiable and University approved excuse.  Late assignments and make-up quizzes are subject to a 10% penalty per day,

PLEASE RESPECT DEADLINES:  Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the lab period they are due, unless otherwise indicated on the syllabus.  Your training as a scientist includes learning to work within deadlines.  Plan ahead and do not needlessly lose valuable points.  If you feel extenuating circumstances are preventing your progress toward completing an assignment, contact your instructor well ahead of the due date to discuss the problem.

An automatic 10% deduction of points applies when an assignment is not turned in when instructor calls for papers.  Leaving lab to retrieve a forgotten assignment is NOT an option.  An additional 10% penalty will apply if the late assignment is not delivered to the instructor within 24 hours and for each 24-hour period following.

CLEANLINESS AND ORDER:  A neat and clean lab is essential for the work we will be doing this quarter.  Each student is responsible for maintaining the lab in good order.  Failure to cooperate will result in lowering of your lab grade (a warning will be given for the first offense and 5-point deduction for each subsequent offense).  Thank you for your cooperation.

USE THE LAB TIME WELL:  It is expected that you will use your scheduled lab time and take full advantage of the resources available to you (instructors, fellow students, computer, etc.).  If you finish early go back over each objective to be sure you have not missed anything and to reinforce concepts.  POP QUIZZES may be given near the end of  any lab period at the discretion of the lab instructor and will be incorporated into the lab grade by increasing the total possible points.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LABORATORY WORK:

1.      Turn off cell phone and other electronic devices before entering class.

2.      Learn your lab instructor's name, office location and scheduled office hours.  Ask questions--the instructor and the assistant are there to help.

3.      Before coming to lab, study each exercise and all related handouts so that you will know the purpose of the work, the materials needed and the methods you will use.  Complete the Pre-Lab Learning Objectives by writing out the complete response to each.  Base your written response to the level of the lab handouts, lecture material, and text

4.      MAKE GOOD USE OF LAB TIME.  Labs are designed to help you correlate portions of the lecture and text material with first-hand experience.  Take notes as your instructor gives you information about what you will see and do.  You will also be instructed about how to use and where to find the materials you will need.  Proceed by following the directions in the lab manual or handout carefully and completely.

5.      You and your lab partner will have the same data, however, each student must do his/her own assignments unless explicitly indicated in the assignment instructions.

6.      YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING YOUR WORK SPACE, SINKS, FLOOR, CHAIRS,  AND COMMON WORK AREAS:

        *  Return permanent slides to the proper boxes.  Report a damaged slide to the instructor so it can be

             replaced.

        *  Plain slides, tools and glassware must be washed, dried completely and returned to the proper place.

        *  Put all solid waste material in the trash container.

        *  Wipe the tabletop and any other surface as needed with the spray table cleaner provided.

        *  Do not leave anything in the sink.

        *  Your instructor will point out the special container for the disposal of SHARP OR BREAKABLE

ITEMS.  Throwing such items as scalpel blades, light bulbs, glass, pins, etc. in the trashcans puts our

maintenance people at risk.  Please take special care to dispose of such items in the SPECIAL CANS.

7.     Please be careful with all equipment, but especially the (expensive!) microscopes.  You will be instructed in their use and care and they should serve you well.  If you experience any problems with the scope, notify your Instructor at once so that it can be repaired.

8.     Finally, enjoy your lab experience.  Make the most out of this opportunity to learn. Life is good!
