Week 3
Intro to Tissues & Skinning of the Fetal Pig (Sus scrofa)

DISSECTION TECHNIQUES

  • A Dissection Guide and Atlas to the Fetal Pig (Smith and Schenk, 1998) has excellent color photographs of the fetal pig to supplement the lab manual.

  • Latex injected into blood vessels makes the veins blue and the arteries red.
  • PLAN your dissection (read directions beforehand).
  • Do as little cutting as possible and never remove a part unless told to do so.
  • Work slowly in the beginning, do not hesitate to ask questions.
  • Work with your partner (one dissecting, one directing).
  • Use gentle pressure, fetal tissues are soft.
  • Make sure to understand how tissues, organs, and body systems fit together into an integrated organism.

    Required Tools

  • Huber Probe (one flattened, one pointed end)
  • Scissors (2 pair - small fine-pointed and larger sturdier)
  • Forceps (2 pair - one smaller with very sharp points, one larger with blunt ends)
  • Gloves
  • (will be provided in lab)
