Star Development
-
Fertilization: the union of a sperm and an egg to
form a single diploid cell called a zygote.
-
Cleavage: during this stage, a large number of mitotic
cell divisions occur, but the cells do not grow, so the mass of cells is
no larger than the original zygote.
-
Blastula: hollow ball of cells formed after
cleavage.
-
Gastrulation: the process by which the hollow
ball of cells undergoes an inpocketing of cells to form a gastrula.
Surface cells migrate into the interior of the embryo and eventually form
three embryonic germ layers.
