LABORATORY GRADE:  Your lab grade will count 20% of your Bios 171 course grade.  The lab grade will be determined by the total number of points earned out of 100 possible points:

Grade Distribution

                 Quizzes     60 points

(Each quiz will cover learning objectives since the previous quiz AND the pre-lab learning objectives for that day.)

Drawings (‘road maps’ of arteries and veins handouts)                                             10 points

                 Lab Final Exam                                                                                                                 30 points

                                                                                                Total Possible                                  100 points

IMPORTANT:  You are expected to attend every lab to receive credit for this course.  If you must be absent, see or phone your lab instructor or leave a message with the department secretary (593-2290) as soon as possible.  There will be NO make-up quizzes or exams without a verifiable and University approved excuse.  Late papers (IF ACCEPTED) and make-up quizzes (IF ALLOWED) are subject to a 10% penalty per day

NOTE:  A neat and clean lab is essential for the work we will be doing this quarter.  Each student is responsible for maintaining the lab in good order.  Failure to cooperate will result in lowering of your lab grade (a warning will be given for the first offense and a five point deduction for each subsequent offense).  Thank you for your cooperation.

ANOTHER NOTE:  It is expected that you will use your scheduled lab time well by taking advantage of the resources available to you in lab (instructors, fellow students, computer, etc.).  If you finish early go back over each objective to be sure you have not missed anything.  POP QUIZZES that will be incorporated into the lab grade (by increasing the total possible points) may be given near the end of the lab period at the discretion of the lab instructor.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LABORATORY WORK:

1.       Turn off your cell phone before entering class.

2.       Learn your lab instructor's name, office location and scheduled office hours.

3.       Before coming to lab, study each exercise and all related handouts so that you will know the purpose of the work, the materials  needed and the methods you will use.   Ask questions--the instructor and the assistant are there to help!

4.       MAKE GOOD USE OF LAB TIME.  Labs are designed to help you correlate portions of the lecture and text material with first-hand experience.  Take notes as your instructor gives you information about what you will see and do.  You will also be instructed about how to use and where to find the materials you will need.  Proceed by following the directions in the lab manual or hand out carefully and completely.

5.       YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING YOUR WORK SPACE:

          *   Permanent slides are to be returned to the proper boxes.

          *   Plain slides, dissecting tools and lunch trays must be washed, dried completely and returned to the proper place.

          *   Put all solid waste material in the trash container.

          *   Wipe the tabletop and any other surface as needed with the spray table cleaner provided.

          *   Do not leave anything in the sink.

          *   Your instructor will point out the special container for the disposal of  SHARP OR BREAKABLE ITEMS.

Throwing such items as scalpel blades, light bulbs, glass, pins, etc. in the trash cans puts our maintenance people

at risk.  Please take special care to dispose of such items in the SPECIAL CANS.

*   OSHA regulations and department guidelines dictate all preserved specimens must stay in the lab.  Pigs may not be taken out of the lab room for any reason.  Thank you for your cooperation.

5   Please be careful with all equipment, but especially the (expensive!) microscopes.  You will be instructed in

their use and care and they will serve you well.  If you experience any problems with the scope, notify your instructor

at once so that it can be repaired.

6.  Finally, enjoy your lab experience.  Make the most out of this opportunity to learn. Life is good!
